Dr. Joel Ying, MD, is a Physician-Educator-Storyteller. How does a doctor become a “spoken story” performance artist? As a holistic medicine practitioner, he believes that medicine is anything that heals the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. In a world of disconnection, stories connect us to ourselves and our communities. When he discovered the healing art of storytelling in 2015, he found a passion that brings him alive… and he is dedicated to sharing that passion and aliveness. Dr. Joel produces events and performs regularly telling meaningful personal stories and original versions of folk tales. Like his practice of medicine, his style integrates the modern with the traditional. He teaches “Storytelling as Healing” at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers and helps to produce the annual Florida Storytelling Festival in Mount Dora. You can find him regularly telling stories, attending storytelling festivals, and listening to storytellers in performances and workshops.
